Researchers from the Nafferton Ecological Farming Group attended the annual meeting of the TILMAN-ORG project at Aston University in Birmingham on January 21 and 22. After the project meeting they had the chance to meet with farmers, growers, advisers and other researchers at the annual Organic Producers’ Conference on the 22 and 23 January. In spite of the snow, over 200 people attended this event. Both of these meetings provided a great opportunity for researchers from across Europe to meet and exchange experiences about working with reduced tillage and green manures in organic systems. Preliminary results from farmer surveys and reviews of the literature were presented to an enthusiastic audience during the Producers’ Conference.
The TILMAN-ORG project is coordinated by the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) in Switzerland, with participation from Newcastle University and the Organic Research Centre (www.organicresearchcentre.com) here in the UK. The project carries on until August 2014 and is expected to identify challenges and produce recommendations for best practice in using reduced tillage and green manures within organic systems. More information about TILMAN-ORG can be found on the project website: www.tilman-org.net.
